Save your Tooth from Extraction with a Crown

Sciota, Pennsylvania

A dental crown represents one of the most effective, versatile treatments that are available today in dentistry. It has applications in both cosmetic dentistry and restorative dentistry. A crown replaces the entire exterior of a tooth, saving a tooth that otherwise would be lost or need to be extracted. Today on the blog, let’s take a deeper look at how a crown can prevent a tooth from being extracted.

A crown improves the aesthetics of a tooth

Has decay or an injury changed the shape of your tooth? By placing a crown, our cosmetic dentists can restore the appearance of your tooth to look complete and natural. We work exclusively with crowns covered with dental porcelain—a beautiful, stain-resistant material that can be sculpted to match the size of your other teeth and also tailored to an identical shade, thus allowing your restored tooth to blend seamlessly with the rest of your smile.

A crown restores strength

Serious damage can compromise the long-term viability of a tooth, because a damaged tooth loses some of its strength. A crown, however, makes your tooth stronger and more stable. Once placed, it restores your biting and chewing function. By contrast, continuing to chew with a damaged tooth can lead to further damage or even a fracture that potentially exposes the nerve.

A crown is the final step in a root canal

Most people get the shivers when they hear they need a root canal but modern dentistry has made this procedure more convenient and comfortable than ever. Once the infection and any bacteria have been removed from the inner structures and the tooth has been cleaned thoroughly, the standard process calls for covering the repaired tooth with a dental crown.

The crown process

It takes two separate appointments at our office to receive a crown. At the first, we treat and clean the affected tooth, removing any area of the tooth that has been damaged or compromised. We capture digital impressions by using our iTero oral scanner. This scanner transmits those images to our dental laboratory, where your crown is fabricated and shipped to our office. Meanwhile, you receive a temporary restoration at our first appointment, then return for our second appointment two weeks later to receive the permanent crown.
